Employee Spotlight – Mike Aponte
1. Where did you go to college?
University of South Carolina
2. What year did you join Scott and Company?
I joined as an intern in January 2018 and was hired full-time in the firm’s Assurance and Advisory
practice in December 2018
3. Why did you choose Scott and Company?
I was drawn to the work culture. All partners always have an open door for anything we need, there
is a great work-life balance, and half-day summer Fridays aren’t too bad either.
4. Give us a summary of your current responsibilities at the firm:
I am an audit supervisor in the firm’s assurance and advisory services practice and perform
assurance and advisory services for various entities, including nonprofit, governmental,
manufacturing, healthcare, and employment benefit plans. I help start engagements by planning
the audit strategy. I am involved in the day-to-day activities of the engagements I serve and
oversee the planning of and performance of substantive testing, and supervise and review our
staff in the preparation of the audit work papers. I assist and supervise in the completion of the
fieldwork portion of the audit and in the completion of the client’s financial and compliance audits.
I am also the auditor responsible for the completion of the client’s single audits if required. I help
train new staff joining the firm and in the many stages of working through an audit engagement.
5. What do you enjoy most about living in Columbia?
I recently moved from Columbia to Charlotte. As an alumnus of the University of South Carolina,
living in Columbia made it easy to attend sporting events. Charlotte is not so far away that I can’t
still attend the games of my favorite college team!
6. If you could go back in time, what event would you want to attend in person?
Super Bowl 3, the one and only Super Bowl for the New York Jets.
7. What interesting fact would you like your readers to know about you?
I played on the club ultimate frisbee team while attending the University of South Carolina.
