Don Mobley, CPA
Where did you go to school?
I earned two degrees from the University of South Carolina (USC), a Bachelor of Science in Accounting (1982) and a Master of Accountancy (1983). I graduated from Chester High School.
Why Scott and Company?
I knew that Scott and Company is a very high quality, progressive firm of certified public accountants, having known our late founding partner Randy Scott for many years. In 2002, Scott and Company’s assurance and advisory services department was growing throughout the state, and Randy and I saw an opportunity for my professional growth while also meeting the firm’s need for someone to help build its audit practice. Randy’s vision for the firm coupled with my experience was a natural fit. Of course, that involved moving to Columbia from Greenville.
Was it an easy decision to move from Greenville?
No, it was not. I really enjoyed living in Greenville. All four of my kids were born there. I have a lot of really good friends there and had fifteen really good years in the upstate. Although I miss living in Greenville a lot, I enjoy living in Columbia. I attended USC for several years, many years ago, and had spent a lot of time after college serving clients in Columbia over the years, so it was a little like coming home, even though I grew up in Chester, South Carolina. For some reason, I have always been drawn back to Columbia, so I feel like this is where I am supposed to be. That being said, I am really glad that we have an office in Greenville because it requires me to be there frequently.
What do you enjoy most about Columbia?
The city’s central location in the state allows me to travel almost anywhere in South Carolina within a couple of hours, including my hometown, or to Greenville, Charleston, or Charlotte. I also like being in the same town as USC and the Gamecocks and it has been great reconnecting with old friends and acquaintances. I have also spent a lot of time over the years working on various projects for state agencies, and being in Columbia allows me to do that even more. Plus, Columbia is a very vibrant city with USC, the State House, Fort Jackson and the many commercial companies that have located here.
What is your greatest achievement?
Helping raise four daughters, who have become exceptional young women. My youngest is a senior at Chapin High School and my third daughter is a junior at USC. My second daughter is starting her second four year stint with the U.S. Coast Guard and is currently based in New Orleans. My oldest daughter is in her second year of medical school in Greenville. They have grown up too fast, but I’m extremely proud of them.
I am also proud to be the managing partner at Scott and Company, and with the help of a great group of people, working to make it the great firm that it is.
